Cylindrical roller bearings carry far higher radial loads than ball bearings of the same seat size — the rolling element contacts the raceway along a line, not at a point. They work in gearboxes, rolling mills, conveyor drives and anywhere a shaft is heavily loaded radially at high speed.
The designation describes axial guidance: NU has an inner ring without ribs and does not guide the shaft axially, NJ guides in one direction, NUP (or NJ with an HJ ring) in both. Most designs are separable, which makes mounting on interference fits and replacement without a puller far easier.
What to look at when selecting
- 01Decide which bearing in the assembly locates the shaft axially — the other should be an NU so it can absorb thermal expansion.
- 02For shock loads check whether the design has a machined cage; a pressed cage copes worse with impacts.
- 03At high speeds consider oil lubrication — grease limits the maximum speed.
- 04A separable bearing needs its own fit for the inner and the outer ring — check both on the datasheet.
Common questions
- What is the difference between NU, NJ and NUP?
- They differ in ribs, that is axial guidance. NU does not guide the shaft at all — the inner ring can shift, which absorbs thermal expansion. NJ guides in one direction. NUP guides in both and acts as the locating bearing.
- Can a cylindrical roller bearing take axial load?
- Only ribbed designs (NJ, NUP), only small loads and only with good lubrication — the roller end then slides against the rib, which generates heat. For continuous axial load use a tapered, angular contact or separate thrust bearing.
