Tapered roller bearings carry high radial and axial loads at the same time, but in one direction only — which is why they are mounted in pairs, in an O or X arrangement. Classic applications are wheel hubs, spindles, bevel gearboxes and anywhere the axial force is constant and significant.

They are separable: the cone with cage and rollers comes off the outer race. That eases mounting but requires setting clearance or preload when assembling — and that step causes most of the failures.

What to look at when selecting

  1. 01Choose the arrangement: O (wide base, stiff guidance) or X (shorter base, simpler assembly).
  2. 02Decide whether the assembly runs with clearance or with preload — preload adds stiffness but also heat.
  3. 03Account for thermal expansion of the shaft: too much preload when cold becomes seizure when hot.
  4. 04The cone and its outer race are a factory-matched set — never mix parts from different bearings.

Common questions

How do I set clearance in tapered roller bearings?
Usually with a nut or a shim pack: tighten until clearance disappears while watching the turning torque, then back off by the value given by the machine manufacturer. Verify with a dial gauge on the shaft, measuring axial movement.
Do both bearings have to be replaced together?
The cone and its matching outer race always go together — they are lapped as a pair at the factory. The second bearing in the assembly is replaced when it has run the same hours: a new one next to a worn one takes most of the load and fails quickly.
