The tapered outer surface allows the sleeve to be driven onto the shaft until the bearing achieves the required internal clearance reduction, without requiring a stepped shaft seat. This makes mounting and dismounting straightforward on plain cylindrical shafting, and the component is intended to be fitted together with a matching tapered-bore bearing rather than used on its own.
