A bearing housing is a complete assembly: body, bearing, seal and shaft locking in one. Instead of machining a seat into the structure, you bolt the housing to the frame. Hence their popularity in conveyors, fans, agricultural machinery and every welded structure where a precise seat would be expensive.

The main types are plummer blocks (bolted from below, type P) and flanged units (bolted to a wall or face plate, types F and FL). Inserts usually have a self-aligning outer surface, so they absorb small alignment errors — which saves many welded structures.

What to look at when selecting

  1. 01Mounting: plummer block for support from below, flanged unit for bolting to a wall or plate.
  2. 02Shaft locking: set screws are cheaper, an eccentric collar copes better with reversing rotation.
  3. 03Body material: cast iron for stationary machines, pressed steel for light structures, thermoplastic for wet environments.
  4. 04Sealing and the option to re-grease — in dusty conditions a grease nipple is worth its price.

Common questions

What is the difference between UCP and UCF?
The same bearing insert in different bodies. UCP is a plummer block bolted to the frame from below, with the shaft parallel to the base. UCF is a square flanged unit bolted with four screws to a wall or plate, with the shaft perpendicular to it. UCFL is the two-bolt oval flanged version.
Can the insert be replaced while keeping the body?
Yes, and that is the usual practice — a cast iron body outlives several inserts. One condition: check that the seat in the body is not worn, because a loose insert will start turning in the housing and destroy it within weeks.
