The XL design corresponds to the heavy-duty series, giving a thicker cross-section than standard rings of the same bore. Fitted onto the shaft, it forms the inner raceway for the mating needle roller and cage assembly, allowing the roller set to run directly on a hardened surface rather than on the shaft itself. This setup is used where the shaft cannot be hardened and ground to bearing tolerances, letting the inner ring absorb the running loads instead.
